Islam: Empire of Faith is the epic PBS documentary that charts the history of Islam from its beginnings in Mecca and Medina in the seventh century to the glory of the Ottoman Empire 1,000 years later.

The demonization of Islam by the West has a long history, stretching back to the First Crusade at the end of the 11th century. This documentary redresses the balance by showing the riches of Islamic culture and the vital role played by Islam in preserving and building upon ancient wisdom from East and West at a time when most of Europe was stumbling through the Dark Ages. Muslim physicians, mathematicians, and astronomers stretched the boundaries of human knowledge, and Muslim architects created some of the most beautiful buildings in the world.

Islam also offers fascinating insights into key personalities, from Muhammad himself--a simple merchant whose vision of a single deity forged warring tribes into a nation--to great conquerors such as Mehmed and Suleyman, who presided over an empire that stretched from Spain to India. The faith itself is clearly explained, and interviews with historians and religious scholars bring home both its simplicity and the way that it survived huge cultural changes (like the Mongol invasions of the 13th century) to emerge stronger than ever. Islam has often been misunderstood in the West, but this splendid documentary helps to set the record straight. --Simon Leake

2 out of 5 stars Beautifully filmed but misleading   September 4, 2010
reviewer200
I agree with some of the earlier reviewers that this film was beautifully done with sweeping vistas both of cities and landscapes, and while acknowledging that tackling a vast topic of this nature was bound to be challenaging, I was disappoointed at the information left out.

The portrait of Muhammad was incomplete, for example. As conveyed in this documentary, he was an indivudal who changed the course of history, a charmastic leader. And yes, while he did show mercy to the inhabitants of Mecca, he also led something like 25 military compaigns whose outcome were not always so favoriable to the conquerored. For example, no mention is made of what happened when Muhammad conquerored the Banu Qurayza, a Jewish clan. The men were separated from the women and decapitated. The slaughter took all day. Including this type of information would have presented him in a more three dimensional manner that one would expect from an historical documentary.

I was also surprised that more effort was not spent in accurately conneying the complexicity of historical events. To watch this film, a person was left with the impression that the Crusades happened because a church was burnt down in Jerusalem. No mentioned is made of the expansion into Europe or the slaughter of vaste numbers of Armenians.

A lot of the information in this public broadcast DVD is incorrect. Also, it paints a very one-sided, unrealistically positive picture of Islam that obviously isn't true and doesn't add up to modern-day experience nor present-day teaching in college courses dealing with the History of Western Civilization.

I am teaching a cultures class for middle school students. This movie fits right into my curriculum and helps present the information in a format that the students enjoy. I am so glad I found it!

Like most religions they have invented or modified their ethics to suit what they saw as right for them selves, but they did not let religion interfere with scientific facts or research. Even today some religions cease certain avenues of research due to what they see as Gods' view of human life.
