Product Description
A humourous musical retelling of the Biblical story of Joseph.

Following the successful 1998 video release of Cats comes another Andrew Lloyd Webber blockbuster musical, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, and it's a savvy choice. It hasn't been represented on film before, it's short enough (78 minutes) to present without cuts, and it has the star power of former teen icon Donny Osmond, who played over 1,800 performances across North America. Rather than record a live performance, Cats director David Mallet conceived Joseph as a film, though one that is based strongly on codirector Steven Pimlott's 1991 London revival and relies more on camerawork than venturing beyond its stagelike sets.

Lloyd Webber's first project with lyricist Tim Rice was originally written in 1968 as a school cantata; accordingly, this film uses a framing sequence of a school recital, with an audience of clapping, singing kids and members of the faculty playing the roles. The Old Testament tale of Joseph and his coat of many colors gets a splashy, vigorous treatment with an energetic cast, Las Vegas-style glitz, and catchy, eclectic songs, including "Any Dream Will Do," "Close Every Door," the peppy "Go, Go, Go Joseph," and various bits of country, calypso, and Elvis. Osmond is perfect in the title role, with a strong voice and winning persona, while London stage veteran Maria Friedman performs well in the central role of the narrator. Richard Attenborough appears (and sings a little) as Jacob, and Joan Collins makes a brief, nonsinging cameo.

Joseph certainly isn't revolutionary musical theater, but if you view it as a kids' show, it's a silly good time (though there are poignant moments too). Parents should note, however, that this production might warrant a little discretion due to one suggestive scene and some risqu costumes. --David Horiuchi

4 out of 5 stars Great Movie   July 23, 2010

I bought this to replace the old VHS tape that had deteriorated beyond repair. It filled the bill nicely. I have had no problems with the sound that some other reviewers have noted. Mine played fine through my home theater system.
As far as content, it's a movie adaptation of a theatrical production. That means it's not going to be exactly like the stage version. In fact, in viewing the "bonus content", it appears that parts can be swapped or omitted to suit the needs of the actors or audience when put on by a school or amature acting company. Kind of like Handel's "The Messiah".
Is it a true representation of the Joseph story from the Bible? No. Does it change the plot in several ways? Yes. Is it a worthwhile production? Yes. It is fun and mostly maintains the essential themes from the Bible story. We have enjoyed this movie for a long time and would still recommend it. I give it 4 stars because in my opinion there is no such thing as a perfect 5 star movie.

1 out of 5 stars Terrible sound quality!   May 20, 2010

I had the VHS tape of this video and loved it, so I just recently purchased the DVD. Not thinking there was any reason to do so, I WISH I had read the customer reviews, as many of them commented on how terrible the sound quality of this DVD is. And I'm here to back them up. I have tried watching this on both my surround sound system and the television alone, and in both cases, it's horrible. Background singers and music are barely audible, but the narrator's part will blast out your ears if you turn up the volume to hear the music. What makes this even more disappointing is that Amazon will not refund your money in full.

This is an excellent DVD. The music is fun and lively and very diverse. We bought it for my daughter's 8th birthday, and we all enjoy it. Our 6 year old loves it, too. Donny Osmond and the female lead have amazing voices. I would recommend it to all - young and old!
